Where you can legally marry in Italy
We work on elopements and micro weddings. There are two routes to a legal wedding in Italy: one of the comune's own buildings or gardens, or an outside venue the comune has approved. Either way the comune (the local council) designates the place a casa comunale, and a wedding there is legal and counts at home. For a smaller wedding the comune's own venues are usually the best choice: historic buildings and magnificent outdoor settings kept for weddings, without the hire fees and minimum guest numbers that private venues built for big celebrations tend to carry. You will still find a castle terrace above a lake, a lemon house on stone terraces, a palazzo on the water, a courtyard in a baroque town, a garden with the sea beyond it. And when you say sì, you are married, in Italy.
One thing to bear in mind: comuni are not in the wedding business. Their venues can be beautiful; their brochures, where they exist, are not, and the wedding page is often buried on the comune's website. That suits us. Our interest is the real wedding, the one where the marriage happens in the setting, and that is what these guides are for. The glossy brochures mostly belong to symbolic ceremonies.
Every place in these mini-guides is somewhere the comune will legally marry a couple who live abroad. Each guide names the comune's venues, indoors and out, gives what the comune publishes about fees, days and how far ahead it books, and links to the official page so you can check it yourself.

Somewhere else in mind?
Most comuni in Italy marry couples from abroad, and plenty of the best places are small towns nobody has written a guide to. Let us know where you are picturing, with your date and roughly how many of you there will be, and we will show you what the comune there can offer.
