Where you can legally marry on the Amalfi Coast
This page covers six comuni that legally marry couples who live abroad: Ravello, Amalfi, Positano and Praiano on the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento across the peninsula, and Anacapri on the island of Capri. Each comune (the local council) has its own gardens, terraces and halls, its own fees and its own rules. They are examples: most comuni on the coast and the peninsula hold civil weddings for couples from abroad, and venues, fees and days change from year to year.
A legal wedding in Italy has to take place somewhere the comune has approved: one of its own venues, or an outside venue it has authorised, such as a villa or hotel. Everything below is on a comune’s approved list, so a wedding there is legal and counts at home.
Ravello: a garden on the edge of the cliff
Ravello has two settings, both run by the comune. The Giardini della Principessa di Piemonte is a public garden with a belvedere over the coast, and it is the outdoor choice. The Sala di Rappresentanza in the municipio holds up to 40 and is where the ceremony moves if it rains.
Ceremonies run at fixed times: 11:00, 12:30, 15:30, 17:00 and 18:30 from May to August, and slightly earlier in the afternoon from September to April. Ravello does not marry on its patron saint’s days, 26 and 27 July, or on a list of other holidays. The rules are tight: acoustic music only with no amplification, no confetti, and no food or drink of any kind, so the aperitivo happens somewhere else. If you need an interpreter, they present themselves to the comune at least five days before the wedding. Couples who live elsewhere pay €650 from Monday to Thursday and €850 from Friday to Sunday and on holidays, at either venue (2019 tariff, still the one the comune publishes).
Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone are not on the comune’s own list.
Amalfi: a harbour hall, the old shipyards or a convent cloister
Amalfi has three approved settings. The Salone Morelli is the wedding hall in the municipio, the former Benedictine monastery of San Benedetto on the seafront. The Arsenale della Repubblica is the vaulted medieval shipyard where Amalfi built its galleys. The third is the former Capuchin convent on the cliff above the town, now a hotel, where the comune marries couples outdoors on the belvedere terrace or the bell-tower terrace, or in the 13th-century cloister, for up to 60 guests.
For couples who live elsewhere, the Salone Morelli costs €350 on a weekday in office hours, €500 outside them and €650 at weekends, and the Arsenale €500, €650 and €800 on the same bands. At the convent the comune charges €300 on a weekday and €400 at weekends, or €200 from 3 November to 31 March, and the hotel adds its own supplement for the setting (comune fee page, last updated 2023). Amalfi marries every day of the week, and on public holidays only by exception. Payments are not refunded if the wedding does not go ahead.
Positano: the municipio terrace
Positano marries couples on the terrace of the municipio, high above the town and looking west over Fornillo. If the weather turns, the ceremony moves to the hall inside, which has majolica tiles and paintings on the walls. Ceremonies run from 11:00 to 20:00 on weekdays and 10:00 to 20:00 on Saturdays. The comune does not publish a fee, so it confirms one when you book.
Praiano: a council chamber and private venues on the comune’s list
Praiano, between Positano and Amalfi, holds weddings in the Sala Consiliare of its municipio, in its other approved venues, and in private hotels and villas the comune adds to its list each year. Where an approved hotel or villa has its own garden, the ceremony can be held outdoors in the garden.
For couples who live elsewhere, the Sala Consiliare costs €450 on a weekday and €600 on holidays and the day before, and the other approved venues €600 and €800 (2026 tariff), with 30% more on civil holidays. Requests for a comune venue go in at least 30 days ahead, and for a private venue at least 90 days ahead. At an outside venue the ceremony lasts no more than an hour.
Sorrento: a cloister, a museum and a citrus garden
Sorrento has three settings, all listed by the comune. The Chiostro di San Francesco is an open cloister of crossed tufa arches beside the church of San Francesco. The Museo Correale di Terranova is the comune’s museum, in an aristocratic house with its original furniture. Villa Fiorentino, home of the Fondazione Sorrento, has a park and citrus grove of about 6,000 square metres on the main street, recently restored. The cloister and the Villa Fiorentino garden are the outdoor settings.
For couples who live elsewhere, fees run from €750 on a weekday morning to €1,200 on a Saturday (2024 tariff), dropping to €600 to €1,000 between 15 November and 15 March (2025 tariff). Sunday weddings are possible only at the Museo Correale. Sorrento asks for half the fee up front to confirm the date, and keeps it if you cancel.
Anacapri: belvederes over the sea
Anacapri, the higher of the two comuni on Capri, holds weddings at nine approved places besides its municipio, and most of them are outdoors. They include the Belvedere della Migliara, facing either the lighthouse or the Faraglioni; the Belvedere dei Sognatori and the old fort at the Punta Carena lighthouse; the Belvedere Damecuta; and the Valletta di Cetrella. Villa Rosa and the Centro Multimediale “Mario Cacace” have both indoor and outdoor settings.
For couples who live elsewhere, every one of the outside venues costs €800, and the municipio €300 on a weekday in office hours, €400 outside them and €500 on holidays and the day before (2022 tariff). Requests go in at least 30 days ahead, and the comune replies within ten days; if two couples ask for the same slot, the earlier request wins. A small reception at the venue is allowed, the venue must be cleared within an hour, and music needs a SIAE licence.
What these have in common
In every case the registrar conducts the ceremony in Italian, and if either of you does not speak Italian, the law requires an interpreter, who cannot be one of you. Couples who live abroad sign a declaration at the comune a couple of days before the wedding. The paperwork you need depends on your nationality, not on the comune. What changes from one comune to the next is the setting, the price, the days and times it marries and how far ahead it takes bookings.
If one of these places is the one you are picturing, or you have somewhere else on the Amalfi Coast in mind, book a call or message us on WhatsApp with your date and roughly how many guests, and we will find out what the comune there can offer.
